Sydney Audio Club Meeting - October 2025

Picture
Sunday 12th October 2025: The October meeting will feature Yamaha's flagship 5000 Series of Pre-Amp, Amplifier and Speakers, courtesy of Len Wallis Audio.

Morris Swift will also present a light-hearted TechTalk prior on "Silicon is cheaper than copper - the cost of HiFi".

T
he doors will be open from 12:30pm to meet and chat with members, before the TechTalk commences at 1:00pm with the regular monthly meeting and music to follow from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

Dear members and friends of Sydney Audio Club Inc.

The next club meeting for 2025 will be held on Sunday 12th October where we will present the Yamaha 5000 series generously supplied by Len Wallis Audio. These NS-5000 speakers, in particular, won the Sound and Image Awards 2018 – Judge Choice Award.

Morris Swift will present a light-hearted TechTalk on ‘Silicon is cheaper than copper – the cost of HiFi’ starting at 1.00 pm. Morris is now well-renowned for presenting entertaining and informative TechTalks in the past.

Members please note that the Sydney Audio Club Inc. Annual General Meeting for 2024-2025 will be held at the Epping Creative Centre on Sunday 9th November. A separate email Notice of Meeting will follow to members.

The doors will be open from around 12:30pm to meet and chat with members before the TechTalk starts at 1:00pm. As our club is based on mutual respect, especially in these open presentations, let us remain respectful towards one another’s views and opinions. There will be one short break after the TechTalk before the meeting starts around 2:15pm.  There will be an afternoon tea break mid-afternoon before the meeting finishes at 5:00pm.

Guests are welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don’t need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. If you happen to be late just quietly slide into a seat and join the meeting. To our guests, we respect the music being played so we request that you refrain from talking while music is being presented. There will be plenty of time for friendly banter between tracks and during the breaks.

Details of the system for 12th October:

Yamaha C-5000 Pre-Amplifier

The C-5000 is a floating and balanced pre-amplifier featuring fully balanced and discrete circuit transmission across all stages of the signal path at Tone Defeat. The patented floating design is adopted across the phono EQ, input amp and line amp stages - removing the influence of ground noise from the signal.

The symmetrical folding-book design for the pre-amplifier PCB mirrors the left and right signal paths for precise matching and layout. Independent dual toroidal transformers for the left and right channels deliver optimal separation therefore producing a sound stage which is faithful to the original source.

Yamaha M-5000 Power Amplifier

As opposed to conventional power amplifier designs whereby power is supplied via a power transistor and the negative polarity is connected to ground, the power supply of the M-5000 is connected directly to each positive and negative side of the output stage. Completely floating the entire power amp circuit from the ground removes any undesirable impact of minute voltage fluctuations or ground noise.  The design also creates an ideal symmetrical layout for employing MOSFET power amplifiers, improving drivability for low impedance speakers.

Delivering high-fidelity performance, a massive toroidal transformer is utilised with a 3 mm thick pure brass base which suppresses unwanted vibrations. The M-5000 features large, high-precision meters on the front panel, enabling audiences to visualise the dynamics of the music.

Yamaha NS-5000 Flagship Speakers

The Yamaha NS-5000 is a 3-way bookshelf design speaker in a bass-reflex enclosure with an internal volume of 65 litres (the smallest possible size for a 30 cm (12”) 3-way configuration) is solidly assembled with the 3-way mitred joint construction technique. The material is the legendary laminated white birch plywood from the island of Hokkaido. Reinforcing crosspieces inside the enclosure, based on FEM analysis, suppress ‘box ringing’ caused by delayed vibration from the six surfaces of the enclosure.

NS-5000's tweeter, midrange, and woofer all feature diaphragms made of 100%* ZYLON®  -  a synthetic fibre created in Japan rated as the world’s strongest and boasting optimum elasticity - and vapor-coated with Yamaha's proprietary monel alloy. The result is a remarkably flat frequency response, with unified tone colour and acoustic velocity over the entire frequency range, providing a comfortable listening experience and meticulously accurate, superb sound reproduction of the highest degree.

Mounted on the back of the tweeter and midrange speaker units are newly developed R.S. (Resonance Suppression) Chambers (patent pending) that suppress unnecessary tube resonance generated behind the diaphragm. All six external surfaces of the enclosure have a glossy black piano finish created using the same dedicated paint, primer, and polishing processes used for Yamaha’s renowned grand pianos.

Woofers                                 30 cm (12”) cone
MidRange Driver                     8 cm (3-1/4") dome type
Tweeter                                 3 cm (1-1/4") dome type
Frequency Response               26 Hz-40 kHz (-10dB), -100 kHz (-30dB)
Nominal Input Power               200 W
Sensitivity                              88 dB / 2.83 V/1 m
Crossover Frequencies            750 Hz / 4.5 kHz
Impedance                             6 ohms (minimum 3.5 ohms)

The second half of the music session is designed to help you evaluate the system with music that you are familiar with. All members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music to be played via streaming, CD and USB via the club’s Reavon player.

All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We’ll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. We will also have a club member act as Disc Jockey for this session.

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others. Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Guests are welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don’t need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound.
