Sydney Audio Club Meeting - April 2021
Amphion and Perreaux
Our first regular Club Meeting was back at Dence Park, Epping and we were very pleased to welcome back David Corazza from Sound And Music who had driven up from Moorabbin, Victoria.
David had arranged a system consisting of Amphion Krypton speakers which were driven by the world exclusive preview of the new Perreaux 200iX amplifier and associated Perreaux App for iOS & Android. An Oppo 105 completed the system.
Amphion do speakers differently. Hailing from Finland, these speakers are refreshingly simple and unpretentious, yet offer a beguilingly effortless musicality. Externally, they evoke a uniquely Scandinavian aesthetic that is elegantly minimal, and quietly confident.
They are hand made in Europe, very room friendly, having a directional response with very little side wall interaction with D’Appolito driver arrangement giving great coherency and focus. So they are easy to place in a room. They have a tweeter waveguide ensuring even dispersion and a low crossover point for the tweeter at 1600Hz ensuring good midband characteristics.
Perreaux is a New Zealand based manufacturer of state-of-the-art hi fi audio components which has recently undergone a change of ownership and the 200iX amplifier is part of their new product line. Their amplifiers are MOSFET based, hand-made with individually selected components by highly-skilled technicians. Perreaux for more than 40 years has almost single handedly championed the sonic virtues of MOSFET based amplification.
The meeting was well attended with only a couple of spare seats available and it was great to see members in person after such a lengthy time without meetings.
The speakers and amplifier were new and hadn’t had any break in so there was some trepidation during the initial setup as the Dence Park meeting room is not sonically ideal. However after the initial setup, the judicial placement of some acoustic panels and a couple of hours of playing music the sound settled down and the system was very enjoyable.
David has presented at the club previously and his honesty, knowledge of the equipment and openness to questions was well received by the membership, with the first half of the meeting being a mix of music and questions.
After a short break the second half of the meeting is members choice of music and a variety of tracks were played. The Amphion speakers with the Perreaux amplifier filled the large meeting room easily and provided a most enjoyable afternoon.
The first regular club meeting was a great success and bodes well for the rest of the year.
The club would like to thank David Corazza for presenting at the meeting, for arranging the supply of the equipment (courtesy of Sound And Music) and for his continuing support of the club.
