April 2016 SAC Meeting
The April 2016 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us meet once again for an afternoon of fine music, great sound and amicable company. Each month the Sydney Audio Club presents an excellent high end audio system for our members and guests. Feel free to bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
For April, we are very pleased to have Henry Kristanto of Redefy Audio present his new Redefy Two speakers. Redefy Audio is a relative newcomer to the Australian market and prides itself in being wholly Australian, all speakers are designed and manufactured in Australia. Henry is also the distributor for Arte Forma high-end electronics from Taiwan, some of which you will hear on Sunday.
Details of the systems.
Redefy Audio speakers. Henry will be bringing his latest speakers, the Redefy Two. They are fairly large floor standers. As Henry has said on his website, "Our speakers are designed to last a lifetime with ultra-efficient Italian drivers, exotic crossovers, birch ply and solid Australian craftsmanship". The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD or flash/USB drive. (Sorry, no vinyl this month.) All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.
Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others of a similar mind.
Guests are always welcome, we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door.

Hello again! just thought I'd pass on an update of our club meeting.
As Henry mentioned above, he brought in his Redefy Neo speakers and two huge subwoofers rather than the Redefy Two. The Neo is a 2-way speaker whereas the Two is a 3-way. Since the club hadn't been graced with experiencing either, it was quite alright.
We used some new room treatment behind the speakers "6 RealTraps Mondo bass absorbers helped a lot to tame pressure off the front wall. We also used some tables placed upright along the sides of the audience“ leaning on that was some more room treatment to reduce midrange and high range reflections. The idea with the tables was first tried by Bryan Fletcher (Audio Note UK) back in March 2014 when Bryan presented back then. It seemed to make a difference but in all honesty we heard the system mostly with the tables in place and not so much without the tables, so admittedly the difference in SQ wasn't fully explored. That said it certainly didn't seem to hurt with the tables on Sunday.
Prior to our meeting start-up, Henry spent a fair bit of time measuring the subwoofer response in the room. In the end, the left sub was tuned to be down by 6db, the right by 2db, relative to the main speakers. Once the meeting started, people in the front rows thought the bass was fine, but when I was standing at the back it was too prominent. So Henry turned it down a bit more.
Sound staging and depth was fine, tonality was good, and resolution was good. A few people said they thought the horn loaded midrange and highs were a bit shouty and thin. Perhaps when you were seated or near the front it might sound that way as usual I did most of my listening when standing at the back, so the effects of the horns wasn't as obvious to me. One person liked the presentation so much that they said they liked the speakers more than the Avantgarde Zero-1 XD's we had in the previous month, when you factor in the cost of the Art Forma pre and power amps, the price of the two systems was similar.
As usual, our sincere thanks to Henry for the effort in preparing and presenting to the club.
Regards,
Tom
