Sydney Audio Club Meeting - May 2022
May Follow Up Report
The third meeting for the year had a slightly different agenda than our normal meetings. The committee had decided it would be a change to allocate part of the meeting to a technical discussion.
One of the club members, Morris Swift who is one half of the team of SerhanSwift speakers had generously offered to present at the meeting with his speakers and agreed to lead a technical discussion.
Morris brought the majority of the equipment for the meeting which consisted of Serhan/Swift mu2 Mk II 2 way standmount speakers, Halcro Lyrus MC20 amplifier, Solid Steel SS6B tripod stands; Les Davis Audio Entropic Isolators.
The meeting started as normal with Morris playing music of his choice interspersed with commentary on why he chose certain tracks and particulars of the tracks to focus on. The Serhan/Swift mu2 Mk II 2 way standmount speakers are a diminutive size in our large meeting room particularly compared to the speakers at the previous club meeting. However the engineering knowledge, expertise and experience of the speaker designers was obvious when music was playing and the speakers easily filled the room with detailed, clear and a balanced music presentation.
The next part of the meeting was devoted to technical discussion particularly focused on speaker design. With quite a knowledgeable membership Morris was asked a wide variety of questions which he easily answered with clear explanations. While I am sure some of the members (including myself) didn’t really understand the full technical details it was clear from Morris’s discussion that every aspect of Serhan/Swift speakers had thoroughly been designed with expert engineering knowledge.
The afternoon tea break was filled with discussion by the members particularly on how such a relatively small size speaker can fill the large meeting room. As one of the members said: "How is this possible ? How can such a diminutive speaker create such an enormous soundstage ?
The second half of the meeting continued with Morris discussing various technical subjects such as the dynamics of speakers, their frequency variations, Quality Factor, and the general overview of the mathematics and calculations regarding their inherent Impedance characteristics, speaker feedback and how they present themselves to an amplifier.
The rest of the meeting was the usual playing of members music tracks with a wide variety of genres which the Serhan Swift speakers handled with ease.
Overall the change in format of the meeting was a success and it was enlightening to hear the required engineering and technical knowledge that is required to produce a well designed and sounding speaker. Morris’s talk was informative, engaging and excellently presented which was well received by those present at the meeting.
Special thanks to Morris for providing his speakers, associated equipment and taking the time to prepare and present to the club on technical aspects of speaker design. The change in format was well received by the members and the club is planning to have more meetings with a segment on a technical subject.

Following afternoon tea the second half of the music sessions will be our popular music BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD, SACD or USB thumb/flash drive. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.
Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others. Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Guests are welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound.
If you are a guest and would like to attend, please email <[email protected]> to ensure we will not exceed the room numbers for the current Covid Guidelines.
