Sydney Audio Club meeting - October 2018
For our October club meeting, we will be having a meeting based solely on what the club has always valued first and foremost … music. Due to the International HiFi show (12-14th October) and the Australian HiFi and AV show (19-21st October), many potential presenters were committed elsewhere. So unfortunately, we were unable to find someone to present their equipment for this month.
Instead, we’ve put together a system based on components from Committee members. We will have the Oppo BDP-105D multi-format player (as a transport) driving the Bricasti DAC, then into a pair of Nord monoblock amps, and then into a pair of KEF LS-50 speakers. In terms of high-end it’s a modest system, but it has proven to sound quite musical.
All the music will be presented by members. For the first session (up to our break), I am asking three members to offer to present 20 minutes of music of their choice. I will take the first three offers I receive. If we get only two offers, then those two people will be offered 30 minutes each. If we get none or only one offer…well, then you might have to listen to some music that the Committee presents.
The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. And be prepared to perhaps play more than 1 track this month. So bring along your favourite music on CD or USB thumb/flash drives (sorry, no vinyl this month). All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.
Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others. Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Guests are welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound.

Follow-Up Report
For our October club meeting we emphasized the music first and foremost. The system was modest but sounded quite good. The little KEF LS-50 passive speakers are already a modern day “classic” – they have a certain balance and enticement that many other speakers in their price range simply cannot match. They sounded very good driven by the Nord monoblock amps.
In the first session we had two members play 30 minutes of music that they love. Howard played some Shostakovich and vocal pop, Jim played all “minimalist” classical music (mostly modern day classical). As usual, our second half was our BYO session.
Here are some comments from the feedback forms:
“Liked speakers. "Minimalist" music session very interesting.”
“Pleasant meeting. Great $$ value for the speakers.”
“Speakers had clarity, detail and imaging.”
“Enjoyable overall. We understand that all meetings will never be the same.”
“Good for a small modest system.”
“Would benefit from a subwoofer.”
“I think this type of meeting is a nice change from time to time. The system was fine.”
“Speakers sounded good for their size.”
