September 2016 SAC Meeting
The September 2016 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us meet once again for an afternoon of fine music, great sound and amicable company. Each month the Sydney Audio Club presents an excellent high end audio system for our members and guests. Feel free to bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
For September, we are very pleased to have Dr Rod Crawford of Legend present (refer to http://www.legendspeakers.com.au/). Legend has been designing and crafting excellent speakers in Australia since 1995. Rod will present the large Big Red Active (BRA) speaker and the smaller Kanga 8s and Kurre 8s.
Details of the system….
Legend Big Red Active speakers. Refer to http://www.legendspeakers.com.au/kumbar.html for detail of these speakers from Legend’s Ultimate range. A review can be found on the Legend web site at http://www.legendspeakers.com.au/BigRedreview.php.
Legend Kurre 8s speakers.
The Kurre 8s from Legend’s Reference range are somewhat larger. Refer to http://www.legendspeakers.com.au/kurre.html. They were very well received by Greg Borrowman in a review – refer to http://www.legendspeakers.com.au/reviews/Kurre8review.pdf
Legend Kanga 8s speakers.
The Kanga 8s are smaller speakers from Legend’s Monitor range and offer great value for the money. They were initially designed for home theatre. Refer to http://www.legendspeakers.com.au/kanga.html.
Hypex NC122MP amplifier. In Rod’s words… “Class D OEM modules that are only just coming off the production line. They are built into the BRAs to drive their mid & treble that also have a BASH 300W class H amp for the bass/sub. I have these same modules built as separate amps to drive the Kangas and Kurres.”
Refer to http://www.hypex.nl/
DEQX HDP-4 preamp processor. The HDP-4 will be used as a full processor for the active BRAs and also in bypass mode just as a DAC for the passive Kangas and Kurres.
Refer to http://www.deqx.com/product-hdp4-overview.php
Sources will be a Medion laptop as the source for digital files (using JRiver MC21) and a Denon DVD-2910 universal player for CD, SACD and DVD-Audio discs.

The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD/DVD-Audio. (Sorry, no vinyl again this month.) All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.
Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others. Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Guests are welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound.
Venue: Epping Creative Centre, Dence Park
Address: 26 Stanley Road, Epping
When: Sunday 11th September 2016
Doors open 1pm

Rod's presentation was excellent indeed. You can tell the passion is still there. It was many years ago that I first met Rod - it was great to catch up with him again.
And it was great to hear his latest speakers. The sound was clear, precise and open. The tone quality and balance was very good. When listening via the Big Red Active speakers (especially), the well recorded and mastered music stood out - the poor quality stuff had nowhere to hide.
I've attached a few comments from the feedback forms:
Informative explanation of speaker design factors.
Very enthusiastic and informative speech from Dr Rod Crawford. Big Red and DEQX package for $10K - not bad!
Very informative presentation on speaker design. Enjoyed the speakers - found them clear and spacious.
Rod Crawford ... was great. Our industry was built on the shoulders of such people.
The DEQX just keeps impressing, as did the speakers, especially the 3 way floor standers...
One of the better meetings sound wise.
Speakers were low distortion indeed! Very unforgiving of poor recordings. Big Red Active are great value considering they come with amps. I would be quite happy with a pair of these! Thanks.
Very good meeting. The room treatment made a difference.
Well-presented and explained.
It was great to have Rod present to the club - he is certainly a knowledgeable and entertaining Aussie legend. We all enjoyed his company.
